IRIS (International Railway Industry Standard) is a certification body established by UNIFE (European Railway Industry), aiming to assure high quality in the railway sector.
IRIS was established to develop a global evaluation system for companies that supply products, design or maintenance services to the main industry in the field of railway vehicle and signaling. With a common language, common evaluation criteria and common audits, IRIS also ensures the transparency of the sector.
The IRIS system sets criteria not only for content, procedures and audits, but also for certification bodies and auditors. All certification bodies must be accredited according to ISO/IEC 17021:2006 and approved by IRIS. And all auditors are required to take IRIS training and pass written and oral exams.
The international railway industry standard IRIS entered into force on July 1, 2010, by being published in the official gazette numbered 27628, article 6c. According to this regulation; TECHNICAL ACCEPTANCE OF CARGO AND WAGON MAIN PARTS As stated in clause 6c, 'the original or the Agency-approved copy of the ISO 9001 or IRIS quality management system certificate' has started to be requested by the Turkish State Railways as an official document as a tender condition. IRIS is managed by UNIFE (Union des Industries Ferroviaires Européennes ´ Association of the European Rail Industry) and its aim is not to make a profit, but to support the establishment of high quality in the entire supply chain in the railway industry. IRIS is based on the ISO 9001 standard. However, it is a complementary extension designed for the evaluation of management systems specific to the railway industry.
